Summary

Cheryl S. Bemel, Ph.D., is a Licensed Psychologist with the TMD, Orofacial Pain, and Dental Sleep Medicine Clinic at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry. She specializes in chronic pain transformation in order to help patients, physicians, and clinical staff members discover the naturally occurring self-healing capacities that exist in each patient. In addition to teaching as Adjunct Professor, she works with adults experiencing chronic pain or chronic health conditions.

Cheryl completed her bachelor’s degree at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, where she graduated with honors in Developmental Psychology. She earned her master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Wisconsin and the University of Minnesota, respectively. She completed her APA/APPIC-approved clinical internship in the Division of Psychiatry at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Cheryl has worked as a pain psychologist at Health Partner’s Neuroscience Center in St. Paul Minnesota, and as a health psychologist at Allina Health’s Bandana Square Clinic.

Through utilizing empirically validated psychological approaches for pain management, including cognitive behavioral strategies, relaxation training, clinical hypnosis, Somatic Experiencing, Accelerated Resolution Therapy, mindfulness meditation, and motivational interviewing, Dr. Bemel is able to help patients alleviate their pain and suffering while improving function and quality of life. Dr. Bemel enjoys bicycling, skiing, playing Pickle Ball, and performing with her tap dance ensemble. Dr. Bemel and her partner have raised 3 children in the Twin Cities area.
